Donauinsel - Vienna's Paradise For Bikers and Nudists

Three years ago, at a sunny summer Sunday we have traveled to Vienna to find out more about the nudism possibilities at the Danube Island (Donauinsel) in the heart of the Austrian Capital. Here is the information, which we have gathered there for you:

Danube Island came into existence in the 60ties as a water construction against floods. The right and the left river bed of the Danube were created. At the non-flood season through the left bed the water does not flow and therefore it is best suitable for bathing and water sports. Asphalt paths for bikers interweave the whole Island and the surrounding Danube shores. The cars have no access to the Island, with the exception of the public parking place at the Reichsbrücke. This Island is 200 to 450 m wide and 16,5 km long, from which are approximately 3 km reserved for nudism and this in the southern part of the island, where the nudist park is situated. The Danube Island are crossing the successive Vienna's bridges over the Danube river.

Through every of the road bridges it is possible to reach the Island by walking or on the bike. The left river bed are crossing small bridges for bikers and the water is here surprisingly clean, at the afternoon sun glow dark blue. The most of the Island is used exclusively for recreation and the stressed Viennese are relaxing here over the weekend. For the plants on the Island cares the Vienna's Garden Service, so the whole Island has the character of a relaxation park. On the left shore of the Danube river are some bicycle lending offices. To hire a bike for the whole day will cost you only about 30 EUR.

On its southern non-island part there are in a 580m long strip along the shore well of set-up trees (shadow) and directly at the shore is a plain area there with the opportunity to play ball games. In the Danube river bed there are pontoon rafts bounded to the shore for jumping into the water and for sunbathing. The shore is lined by large smooth stones with an optimal access to the water. Because the cyclist's path leads directly over the upper shore ridge, which is a part of the nudist area, the bikers are mixing here with the nudists and no one matters obviously about it. You can view everything on a bicycle from a large or nearer distance, without to be considered to be "gapers"
. If you are looking for undisturbed privacy and quiet place for sunbathing, for this purpose is best suitable the terrace-like shore on the island part of this nudist section. At the northern beginning of the nudist park there are sunbathing nudist together with non-nudists, because it is not absolutely clear where the nudist section begins.

A pub with outdoor terrace and refreshing stall is there, and this near arriving road, which leads here directly from the Vienna's embankment highway A22. The restaurant has at the asphalt cycling path benches with wooden tables, where you can also refresh yourself naked. The whole park has of course a lot of further refreshing stalls including ice-cream stands. Along the shore there are in 210 meters distance from each other good maintained sanitary installations.

If you want, you have the opportunity here to drive on a bike naked a "cycle" through the nudist park over the delay device and a bridge, interchanging the Danube shore and the shore of the Island. The sturdy nudists do not miss the opportunity to pursue nudism even at a bad weather. Along the whole park four ambulances are patrolling for the case of emergency.

A little bit smaller and more reposeful nudist site is in the northern part of the Island, just behind the Nordbruecke. Over this small nudist section is a small coppice, where gay nudist are meeting. What are they doing in this coppice, this was not the subject of our investigation anymore.

At the Arrival - Should you decide to visit the nudist park, from the embankment highway A22 follow the direction Oelhafen Lobbau. This direction will lead you directly to the embankment part of the nudist park, which will be on your right. It is possible to park here along the road comfortably transversely to the road direction. But attention: On hot summer weekends it is very crowded here and the police does not allow the cars to drive further, because it is nowhere to park. Therefore if such unfavorable situation emerges, park anywhere on the Danube shore at the Island and reach the Island on a bike or walk there over a bridge.
